Location:25 miles northwest of Santa Cruz via Highway 9 and Highway 236.

Special Features:California's oldest state park, Big Basin Redwoods was established in1902 and in 1928 became the first unit of the newly formed CaliforniaState Park System. (Actually, Yosemite, through 1864 federallegislation became California's and the nation's first state park, butit was later transferred to federal jurisdiction.) Park is home to thelargest contiguous stand of ancient coast redwoods south of SanFrancisco and features more than 80 miles of trails, including some that linkBig Basin to Castle Rock State Park (see separate entry) and theeastern reaches of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
