king of Assyria; ruled from 722 to 705 B.C. Sargon II came to power after the overthrow of Shalmaneser V. He tried, in his various policies, to reconcile the interests of the priesthood and privileged cities of Assyria and Babylonia with the interests of the military party. He completed the conquest of Israel in 721 B.C. and, with the taking of Carchemish in 717 B.C., the conquest of Syria. In 714 B.C. he defeated Rusa I, the king of Urartu, and conquered a number of regions in eastern Asia Minor and in Media. In 710 and 709 B.C., Sargon II conquered Babylonia.
