Sotskov, Boris Stepanovich

Born May 8 (21), 1908, in Tsarskoe Selo, now the city of Pushkin, Leningrad Oblast; died Nov. 4, 1972, in Moscow. Soviet scientist in the field of automation and remote control. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1960).

Sotskov graduated from the Technical Military Academy of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army in 1931. He held a teaching post at the academy until 1938. He taught at the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute from 1938 to 1942, at the Moscow Institute of Aviation in 1943 and 1944 and from 1963 to 1972, and at other institutions of higher education. Sotskov became a professor in 1955. Between 1942 and 1972 he conducted scientific research and performed administrative duties at the Institute of Problems of Control of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

Sotskov’s principal works deal with the physical and mathematical foundations of the theory of automatic and remote-control equipment, with methods of calculating and designing such equipment, with problems of the general systematization and standardization of equipment used in the automation of production, and with physical and engineering aspects of reliability theory.

Sotskov was awarded three orders and several medals.
