Sasovo

a city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Sasovo Raion, Riazan’ Oblast, RSFSR; located on the Tsna River of the Oka River basin. Railroad station on the Riazan’-Ruzaevka line, 184 km southeast of Riazan’. Population, 29,000 (1975). Sasovo has a food industry, represented by a meat-packing plant and dairy combine. There are plants producing commercial equipment, agricultural machinery, and rein-forced-concrete items; there are also railroad-transport enterprises. The city has garment, weaving, and furniture factories. A plant for the production of automatic transfer lines is under construction (1975). Educational institutions include technological and agricultural technicums and a civil aviation pilot school. Sasovo became a city in 1926.
