Theodorik

(also Theodoricus or Dětřich). Date of birth unknown; died circa 1381. Czech painter.

Master Theodorik was first mentioned in a work of 1359. He was employed at the court of Emperor Charles IV, whose summer residence, Karlätejn Castle near Prague, houses the major works attributed to him. His best known creation is a series of 129 panel paintings—half-length representations of saints that cover three interior walls of the Chapel of the Holy Cross at Karlstejn. These paintings, which depict the saints as distinct individuals, are known for their expressive chiaroscuro effects.
