(shōrt-bow'ĕl sin'drōm) Complex of symptoms that can result whenever the absorptive surface of the small bowel is reduced, as in massive or multiple small bowel resections. Symptoms include diarrhea, weight loss, malabsorption, anemia, and vitamin, mineral, and electrolyte abnormalities. Degree of malabsorption and malnutrition depends on the site and extent of the resection.
