Transcarpathian Lowland

Located in the southwestern Ukrainian SSR, the Transcarpathian Lowland is the northeastern borderland of the Middle Danube Plain. The surface is flat, inclining gently from the Carpathian foothills toward the southwest; it is drained by the Tisza and its tributaries, the Borzhava, Latoritsa, and Uzh. The soils are mainly turflike (podzolized and gleyified) and alluvial, in places meadowy and marshlike. Much of the lowland is cultivated, mainly with wheat, corn, sunflowers, and tobacco; orchards and vineyards are also found. Here and there are small groves of oak and hornbeam.
