Pleve, Viacheslav Konstantinovich

 

Born 1846; died July 15 (28), 1904, in St. Petersburg. Russian state figure.

Pleve graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1867. He served in the legal department. In 1881 he became director of the police department. From 1884 to 1894, Pleve was a senator and deputy minister of internal affairs. In 1894 he became state secretary and director in chief of the codification department of the State Council. From 1899 he was a minister and secretary of state for Finnish affairs. In April 1902, Pleve was appointed minister of internal affairs and chief of the gendarmes. He carried out an extremely reactionary policy, employing repressive measures. He was murdered by a Socialist Revolutionary, E. S. Sozonov.
