In central OH, south of Columbus; organized Jan 12, 1810 from Ross, Fairfield, and Franklin counties. Name Origin: A folk etymological form of Piqua, believed to be the name of the Shawnee subtribe to which Tecumseh (1768-1813) belonged. Name is thought to mean 'ashes,' referring to the myth that the first man of their tribe rose out of ashes.
