Akhsharumov, Dmitrii Ivanovich

Born Oct. 11, 1785; died Jan. 13, 1837, in St. Petersburg. Russian military figure and historian; major general (1820).

Akhsharumov graduated from the First Cadet Corps in 1803. In 1806–07 he participated in the war with France, in 1809–10 in the war with Turkey. During the Patriotic War of 1812 he served as adjutant to General P. P. Konovnitsyn. In 1813–14 he participated in foreign campaigns and during 1815–17 he was staff duty officer in the occupation corps in France. In 1813 he anonymously published a historical-journalistic brochure, A Historical Description of the War of 1812; in 1819 he published A Description of the War of 1812, the first general work on the Patriotic War based on archival material. Akhsharumov retired in 1820. With the support of M. M. Speranskii he compiled the Code of Military Regulations, the first attempt at military codification in Russia.
