short-range navigation short-range navigation[′shȯrt ¦rānj ‚nav·ə′gā·shən] (navigation) Navigation employing only aids usable at short ranges. Also known as shoran. short-range navigation (SHORAN)A precise short-range navigation system that uses the time of travel of pulse-type transmissions from two or more fixed stations to measure the slant-range distance from the station. Also, in conjunction with a suitable computer used in precision bombing, SHORAN can be accurate to within a few yards in 100 miles (a few meters in 160 km). |
