Akhtyrka

a city; center of Akhtyrka Raion, Sumy Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. It is the terminal point of a railroad branch extending from Kirikovka (on the Sumy-Liubotin line). Population, 39,700 (1968). There are enterprises of the metalworking and machine-building industries (an agricultural machine plant). There is also food industry (a meat combine, a creamery, and a brewery) and light industry (garment and footwear factories), as well as a medical furniture plant, a construction material plant, and others. There is a technicum for the mechanization and electrification of agriculture and a medical school. Akhtyrka was founded in 1641.
