Udal’tsov, Aleksandr Dmitrievich

Born May 2 (14), 1883, in Moscow; died there Sept. 25, 1958. Soviet historian. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). Member of the CPSU from 1928.

Udal’tsov graduated from the natural sciences department of the physics and mathematics faculty of Moscow University in 1908 and from the university’s faculty of history and philology in 1913. He was a professor at Moscow State University from 1919 to 1941. From 1938 to 1946 he was head of the section of medieval history of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. From 1946 to 1956 he was director of the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. At the same time, from 1946 to 1950, he was head of a subdepartment of the Academy of Social Sciences of the Central Committee of the CPSU.

Udal’tsov’s main works dealt with the origin of feudal relations in Western Europe. Udal’tsov opposed the bourgeois theory of the extreme antiquity of the feudal patrimonial estate among the Germans and criticized the views of A. Dopsch.

Udal’tsov was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
