Satka
a city under oblast jurisdiction and administrative center of Satka Raion, Cheliabinsk Oblast, RSFSR; located on the western slope of the Urals. Railroad station on the Ber-diaush-Bakal branch line, 236 km west of Cheliabinsk. Population, 44,000 (1974). Magnesite is mined and processed in Satka. The city has the Magnezit Plant, which produces refractory products for metallurgical plants, a metallurgical plant, founded in the mid-18th century, a plant producing reinforced concrete, and a milk plant. Educational institutions include a mining and ceramics technicum and a medical school. The city also has a museum of local lore. Satka became a city in 1937.
