Udins

(self-designation, Udi or Uti), a people living in the USSR. Numbering about 6,000 (1970 census), the Udins live in the village of Nidzh, in Kutkashen Raion, Azerbaijan SSR, in the settlement of Vartashen, the administrative center of Vartashen Raion, Azerbaijan SSR, and in the village of Oktomberi, in Kvareli Raion, Georgian SSR. Their language is related to the Dagestan languages. Azerbaijani, Russian, Georgian, and Armenian are used as the literary languages. Believers are Christians—members of the Orthodox or Gregorian Church. Most Udins are engaged in farming, fruit growing, or stock raising; some work in local industry. The culture of the Udins living in the Azerbaijan SSR resembles that of the Azerbaijani, while the culture of those living in the Georgian SSR resembles that of the Georgians.
