Satpura

a mountain range in India, on the northern Deccan Plateau, between the valleys of the Narmada and Tapti rivers. Length from west to east, approximately 800 km; elevations to 1,353 m (in the Mahadeo Hills). The Satpura Mountains are composed primarily of schists, granites, and quartzites, covered with basalt lavas. The peaks are frequently plateau-like, with steep southern slopes and more gentle northern slopes. The slopes are severely dissected by river valleys, and there are developed fault scarps. The range has sparse deciduous forests of teak, sal, and bamboo.
