Bakonjo

Bakonjo

 

a people living in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire) north of Lake Edward, and in the southwestern region of Uganda. Their combined population was estimated at 400,000 in 1967. The language of the Bakonjo is Olukonjo or Lukonjo, which belongs to the northeastern group of the Bantu language family. The majority of Bakonjo adhere to local traditional beliefs, although some are Christians. Their chief occupations are agriculture (main crop, bananas) and, on the shore of Lake Edward, fishing. Some of the Bakonjo work in industrial enterprises of the Congo and Uganda.
