A gene on chromosome 21q22.2 that encodes an androgen-regulated transmembrane serine protease, the translocation of which to either ERG (at 21q22.3) or ETV1 (at 7p21.2) (both of which belong to the ETS transcription factor family) provides a selective mechanism for prostatic cancer initiation or, more likely, maintenance. It is strongly expressed in the small intestine.
