puborectalis (muscle)

[TA] the medial part of the pubococcygeus muscle (levator ani) that passes from the body of the pubis around the posterior aspect of the anus to form a muscular sling at the level of the anorectal junction; it contracts to increase the anorectal (perineal) flexure during a peristalsis to maintain fecal continence and relaxes to allow defecation.
