Sauerland

Sauerland

the northern part of the Rhenish Shale Mountains in West Germany between the Sieg River in the south and the Ruhr in the north, rising to 843 m in height. The Sauerland is formed of shales with overlying massifs of lime-stones and quartzites and is divided into separate ridges by deep river valleys. Mixed forests cover the slopes, and meadows predominate on the summits. There is iron mining and stone quarrying.
