Saule

Saule

the medieval name of the Lithuanian city of Ŝiauliai. It was near Saule in 1236 that Lithuanian troops routed the Knights of the Sword. The Lithuanians were commanded by the žemaitė prince Vykintas, and the Germans by the order’s grand master. The grand master and 50 knights were killed in the battle, and the remaining knights were forced back beyond the Dvina. Rebellions broke out in a number of regions previously conquered by German feudal lords that led to the liberation of the Zemgalians and Curonians.
