Tsung Dao LeeLee, Tsung DaoBorn Nov. 25,1926, in Shanghai. Chinese physicist. Lee studied at the universities of Hank’ou (Hankow) and K’unming and, after moving to the United States in 1946, at the University of Chicago. He was appointed a professor at Columbia University in 1953. Together with Chen Ning Yang, he expressed the hypothesis of the nonconservation of parity in weak interactions, which was experimentally confirmed by Chien Hsiung Wu and his colleagues in experiments whose technique was developed by Lee and Yang (Nobel Prize, 1957). Lee has also written works in quantum field theory, statistical mechanics, astrophysics, and the theory of turbulence.
