Pukhlev, Aleksi Romanov
Born Sept. 8, 1905, in Gabrovo. Bulgarian physician, specialist in internal medicine. Academician of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (1967); People’s Scientific Worker of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1969) and Hero of Socialist Labor (1971). Member of the Bulgarian Communist Party since 1945.
Pukhlev graduated from the medical department of the University of Sofia in 1931. In 1949 he became head of the subde-partment of internal diseases at the university. During the years 1958–60 he also served as rector of the Higher Medical Institute, and in 1962 he was named head of a scientific group organized by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences to study hypertension. Pukhlev’s principal works are devoted to problems in cardiology and nephrology. In 1968, Pukhlev became president of the Union of Medical Societies of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, he became a foreign member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR in 1969. He has been awarded four orders and various medals.
