V(D)J recombination[¦vē¦dē¦jā rē‚käm·bə′nā·shən] (genetics) A special type of chromatin diminution in which site-specific breakage within immunoglobulin heavy- and light-chain gene clusters and T-cell receptor gene clusters, elimination of part of each cluster, and rejoining of the ends of the remaining deoxyribonucleic acid fragments make possible an enormous number of different antibody and cell-surface antigen receptor specificities.
