Savarenskii, Evgenii Fedorovich

Born July 5 (18), 1911, in Tula. Soviet geophysicist and seismologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Son of F. P. Savarenskii.

In 1932, Savarenskii graduated from the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute. From 1931 to 1933 he worked at the Geophysical Institute of the People’s Commissariat of Agriculture of the USSR, and in 1934 he began working at the Institute of Seismology. Later, he worked at the O. Iu. Shmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1950 he became a professor at Moscow University. In 1949 he was appointed head of a network of seismic stations in the USSR.

Savarenskii’s research has dealt mainly with seismology, the interpretation of seismic waves, and the occurrence and propagation of seismic sea waves. The Atlas of Earthquakes in the USSR (1962) was compiled with Savarenskii as coauthor and executive editor. In 1956, Savarenskii became chairman of the Interdepartmental Council on Seismology and Earthquake-proof Construction of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1970 he became president of the European Seismological Commission and in 1971 president of the International Commission on Earthquake Prediction.

Savarenskii has been awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and various medals.
