Konen, Valentina Dzhozefovna

 

Born July 29 (Aug. 11), 1909, in Baku. Soviet musicologist; doctor of art studies (1946).

From 1921 to 1931, Konen lived in the USA, where she studied at the Juilliard School in New York (1924–29). In 1938 she graduated from the Moscow Conservatory (history and theory department). She taught the history of foreign music at the Moscow Conservatory (1938–41 and 1944—49; docent from 1945) and simultaneously at the Gnesin Music Teachers College (from 1944). She was a professor at the Urals Conservatory (1949–51). In 1960, Konen became a senior research worker at the Institute of the History of the Arts, under the Ministry of Culture of the USSR. Her scholarly interest centers chiefly on problems in Western European and American music.
