Valentin Afanasevich Koptiug
Koptiug, Valentin Afanas’evich
Born June 9, 1931, in lukhnov, Kaluga Oblast. Soviet organic chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1968). Member of the CPSU since 1961.
Koptiug graduated from the D. I. Mendeleev Moscow Institute of Chemical Technology in 1954. In 1960 he became head of a laboratory at the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1966, head of the department of organic chemistry at the University of Novosibirsk.
Koptiug’s principal studies are devoted to reaction mechanisms of aromatic compounds and molecular rearrangements with the participation of carbon ions. He discovered a series of new isomerization reactions and determined the mechanisms of displacement of various substituents in the aromatic ring. He has studied the structure and reactivity of arene ions and their analogs. Koptiug published the monograph Isomerization of Aromatic Compounds (1963). He has been awarded the order of the Badge of Honor and a medal.
