Valentin Aleksandrovich Kamenskii

Born Sept. 16 (29), 1907, in Tula. Soviet architect; People’s Architect of the USSR (1970). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

Kamenskii graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Industrial Construction Engineers in 1931. From 1951 to 1971 he was chief architect for Leningrad. He is one of the authors of the draft for a general plan of development for Leningrad for 1960–80 and was director of projects for the planning and construction of Prospekt Stachek (1951–55) and Komsomol Square (1956), as well as the entry square of the Avtovo area (1954), and the Dachnoe area (beginning in 1960). He collaborated on the design of the Oktiabr’ motion-picture and concert hall (1967) and the experimental residential district on Vasil’evskii Island (1967). He has been an instructor at the Leningrad Institute of Industrial Construction Engineers (1931–39) and the Leningrad Civil Engineering Institute (since 1941; professor since 1959). He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Badge of Honor, and medals.
