a river in central Africa, in the northern part of the Republic of Zaїre. The Uele measures more than 1,000 km in length. It originates in the Monts Bleus, to the west of Lake Mobutu Sese Seko (formerly Lake Albert). Its upper course is called the Kibali. The Uele flows through rain forests and savannas. Numerous rapids make the river unnavigable. The confluence of the Uele with the Bomu River forms the Ubangi River.
