a sea in the Pacific Ocean between the islands Flores, Sumba, and Timor. The Savu’s area is 104,000 sq km, and its depths reach 3,370 m. The temperature of the surface water is approximately 26°C in August and 28°C in February; salinity is approximately 34 parts per thousand. The temperature of the bottom water is 3.5°C, and the salinity is 34.6 parts per thousand. The currents on the surface move primarily in a westerly direction and in August attain speeds of 50 cm per sec. Benthic sediments are composed of terrigenous silt mixed with volcanic material. Tides are irregular and semidiurnal, with tide ranges to 2 m.
