Viacheslav Vasilevich Stepanov

Stepanov, Viacheslav Vasil’evich

Born Aug. 23 (Sept. 4), 1889, in Smolensk; died July 22, 1950, in Moscow. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946).

Stepanov graduated from Moscow University in 1912 and became a professor at the university in 1928. His principal works deal with the theory of differential equations and its applications in various fields, for example, celestial mechanics. In the theory of functions, he investigated the properties of the important class of functions called Stepanov’s almost periodic functions. He studied the existence conditions for various differentials of functions of two variables. Stepanov was one of the founders of the Soviet school of the qualitative theory of differential equations. He was the author of A Course in Differential Equations (1937).

Stepanov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1951.
