Viazmitinov, Serge, Kuz’mich

 

Bor. Oct. 7 (18), 1744; died Oct. 15 (27), 1819, in St. Petersburg. Count, Rus-sian general of infantry (1798).

In the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-91, Viazmitinov commanded the Ekaterinoslav Jaeger Corps. In the 1790’s he was governor of Mogilev, Simbirsk, and Ufa provinces. From 1795 he commanded the Orenburg Corps and from 1796 was governor of Orenburg Province. He retired in 1799. From September 1802 to January 1808 he was minister of war and directed the organization of the central bodies of military administration and reorganization of the army. He became a member of the State Council in 1811. In 1805 and 1812 he was commander in chief of the troops in St. Petersburg.. From March 1812 he was minister of police, and from September of that year he was also chairman of the Committee of Ministers.
