Pillsbury, Harry Nelson

(1872–1906) chess player; born in Somerville, Mass. The best American since Paul Morphy, he beat an unprecedented field including the world champion, the ex-champion, and the champions of six countries, in Hastings, England (1895). Before dying of apoplexy, he twice beat Jackson Showalter for the U.S. title (1897, 1898).
