Pillsbury, John E.

Pillsbury, John E. (Elliott)

(1846–1919) oceanographer; born in Lowell, Mass. He was a career U.S. Navy officer (1867–1908) who retired as a rear admiral. An authority on naval hydrography and geodesy, he determined the axis of the Gulf Stream in the Straits of Florida and off Cape Hatteras, and elucidated the geophysical laws regulating this current's flow.
