rescue therapy

A highly nonspecific term with various meanings depending on the context, including the use of drug cocktails in patients with HIV who have developed resistance to antiviral drugs, defibrillation in patients with ventricular fibrillation, and leucovorin in patients with methotrexate toxicity. The use of any form of rescue therapy in randomised clinical trials may compromise the data derived from such studies.
