Vodlozero

a lake in the southeastern Karelian ASSR. Length, 36 km; width, 16 km; area, 322 sq km.; average depth, approximately 4 m. Located at an altitude of 136 m. The shoreline of Vodlozero is sinuous. In the eastern part of the lake there are about 200 islands. The lake is fed by snow and rain. Its level fluctuates about 2 m per year. Vodlozero freezes in the beginning of November and opens in the beginning of May. Its largest tributary is the Ileksa River. In 1935, Vodlozero was made into a reservoir for seasonal regulation of the flow of the Viama and Sukhaia Vodla rivers, of which the Vodlozero is the source. The Sukhaia Vodla is cut off at its source by a dam without sluices. At its greatest head the area of the lake is 370 sq km. Vodlozero is rich in fish, including whitefish, vendace, bream, and pike perch.
