Sawyer, Philetus

(1816–1900) U.S. representative/senator; born in Whiting, Vt. He moved to Wisconsin where he became a successful lumberman. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., Wis.; 1865–75) and to the U.S. Senate (1881–93). Charged with corruption by Robert La Follette, he was defeated for reelection.
