pulmonary delivery system

pulmonary delivery system

A system designed for noninvasive, systemic delivery of therapeutic macromolecules (e.g., insulin, tobramycin, leuprolide, dronabinol, PTH) via alveolar absorption.
Pros
Pulmonary route offers the highest bioavailability of any noninvasive route and facilitates more rapid drug absorption in the circulation compared with subcutaneous injection.

Cons
Administration of insulin, the pilot for the pulmonary delivery platform, resulted in inconsistent serum levels. It proved too expensive for the market.
