an urban-type settlement in the Karakalpak ASSR (Uzbekistan SSR). It has a landing on the left bank of the Amu Darya River, 11 km northeast of the railroad station Khodzheili (on the Chardzhou-Kungrad line). Population, 6,900 (1969).

Vodnik

a voluntary, all-Union sports association of the trade union of workers of the sea and river fleet. It was organized in 1938 by a merger of the voluntary sports associations Moriak and Vympel.

On Jan. 1, 1971, there were 1,500 primary athletic collectives active in Vodnik; these were established in ports, enterprises, and institutions of learning of the sea and river fleets (including those on 848 large sea-going vessels) and had a membership of approximately 200,000 athletes. The collectives of Vodnik include the Baltika team (water polo, Leningrad), the Vodnik team (field hockey, Arkhangelsk), and the Chernomorets team (soccer, Odessa). Among the members of Vodnik are Olympic champions L. Geishtor (canoeing, 1964) and V. Mankin (sailing, 1968), world champions N. Boiko and V. Kononov (kayaking, 1970), and 21 masters of sport of international class. On Jan. 1, 1971, Vodnik had 417 masters of sport, approximately 5,000 first class sportsmen and candidates for master of sport, 57,000 members with high sport ratings, over 20,000 general instructors, and 12,000 sport judges; Vodnik makes use of 26 stadiums, 103 gymnasiums, and five swimming pools.
