Berrias Layer

(named after the village Berrias in central France), the first layer from the bottom in the Cretaceous system. It was first distinguished by the French geologist H. Coquand in 1876. A cross section shows limestone with layers of marl above. It is divided into two zones: Beriasella grandis and Beriasella bossieri. The layer has been found in the Alps, the Carpathians, and the Caucasus, as well as in the Far East and northeastern USSR.
