Verkhneuralsk

a city (since 1781); center of Verkhneural’sk Raion, Cheliabinsk Oblast, RSFSR. Situated on the upper reaches of the Ural River, 58 km north of the Magnitogorsk railroad station. Junction of automobile roads. Population, 11,900 (1969). Enterprises in Verkhneural’sk (mills, creameries, a brewery, and other plants) serve mainly the needs of Magnitogorsk. The city was founded in 1734 as a fortified point (the Verkhneiaik fortress).
