Verkhniaia Angara

 

a river in Buriat ASSR. Originates in the Baikal-Vitim watershed and flows into Lake Baikal, forming a delta. Length, 438 km; area of basin, 21,400 sq km. Its upper reaches flow mainly in a narrow valley, forming rapids. The lower reaches flow along a broad, swampy valley, penetrated by bayous. It is fed by various sources, predominantly by rainwater with a large proportion of underground water. It freezes at the end of October and breaks up at the beginning of May. The average rate of flow is 265 eu m per sec; the minimum winter rate of flow at the mouth is 45 eu m per sec. It is navigable as far as the Kamniokan landing (270 km from the mouth).
