Pimy

(1) An old Russian name for felt boots (valenki, katanki, chesanki). The term is still used in several regions of the USSR, for example, the Urals, Western Siberia, and the Bashkir ASSR. The root of the word is used to form such words as pimokat (pimy maker).

(2) In the northern part of European Russia and in Western Siberia, the Russian name for the winter boots worn by local peoples. The term is used to designate high boots (up to the groin) made of skin from the leg of a reindeer; the fur is on the outside. The name pimy is also applied to bakari (northern Kras-noiarsk Krai) and torbaza (Yakutia).
