Southern Tigre

a people of northern Ethiopia. The Southern Tigre, most of whom live in villages in Tigre and Eritrea provinces, number approximately 2.6 million (1975, estimate). They speak the Tigrinya language, which belongs to the Southern Peripheral group of Semitic languages. Their religion is Monophysite Christianity. The Southern Tigre live primarily in what was once the ancient Ethiopian kingdom of Aksum. Most are agriculturalists, growing wheat, teff, durra, barley, and legumes and raising cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and donkeys. Many Southern Tigre are artisans or traders.
