On the northeastern border of TN, south of Johnson City; organized Mar 23, 1875 from Washington and Carter counties. Name Origin: For Unicoi Creek, which runs through it, or a variant form of Cherokee unaka 'white,' referring to the color of the rocks in the Unaka Mountains.
