Valentinian I, Flavius

Born 321; died 375. Roman emperor from 364.

After appointing his brother Valens coruler and retaining for himself the dominant position in the empire, Valentinian I reigned over the western part of the Roman Empire (from 367, jointly with Gratian). He waged a defensive war against the Quadi, the Alemanni, and other tribes that had intruded into the outer regions of the Empire. During the reign of Valentinian I, major anti-Roman upsurges occurred in the provinces, such as the revolts led by Procopius in Asia Minor and Thrace (365-366) and Firmus in Africa (372-373).
