(Panolis flammea), a moth of the family Noctuidae, a pest of pines. The wingspread reaches 40 mm. The fore wings range in color from gray-brown to brown-red and are marked with transverse dark-brown stripes and white borders; the hind wings are gray-brown. The pine moth is distributed wherever there are pines. There is one generation per year. The caterpillars feed on needles and gnaw through buds and shoots. Periods of intensive reproduction are noted in the central part of the European USSR, in Byelorussia, in the Ukraine, and in Western Siberia. The pine moth does the same damage as Bupalis pintarias; control measures are the same for both insects (seeBUPALIS PINJARÍAS).

(Dendrolimuspint), also pine lappet, a moth of the family Lasiocampidae, a pest of coniferous trees. The wings, which have a spread of 6–9 cm, are usually grayish brown. The fore wings are marked by three transverse, irregular stripes and a white spot. The larva reaches 75 mm in length and is gray with reddish poisonous hairs. The insect’s range corresponds to that of the Scotch pine and other coniferous trees. Besides the pine trees, the larvae are injurious to cedars, spruces, and larches. There is usually one generation each year; however, in the northernmost parts of the insect’s range the life-span may reach two years as a result of secondary hibernation of caterpillars.
