Pine-Shoot Moths

(in Russian, pobegov’iuny), the collective name for several genera of moths of the family Tortricidae (typical tortricids). The moths are reddish or, less frequently, dark brown. Distributed mainly in North America, they are encountered predominantly in coniferous forests. The USSR has about 20 species. Moths of the genus Rhyacionia chew on pine shoots, causing them to become distorted. Species of the genus Blastesthia eat pine buds, and the species Petrova resinella builds gall-like resinous dwellings on pine twigs. The larvae of some species live in coniferous cones.
