Shubin, Semen Petrovich

Shubin, Semen Petrovich

Born July 18 (31), 1908, in Liepāja, in what is now the Latvian SSR; died Nov. 28,1938. Soviet theoretical physicist; doctor of physical and mathematical sciences (1935).

Shubin graduated from Moscow State University in 1927. He was a member of the staff of the Urals Physicotechnical Institute (now the Institute of Physics of Metals of the Urals Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in Sverdlovsk) from 1932 to 1937. In 1935, Shubin was named a professor at the Urals Physicomechanical Institute (later a department of the Urals Polytechnic Institute).

Shubin’s principal works dealt with the classical vibration theory, the quantum theory of solids, and quantum theory in general. He and I. E. Tamm formulated a quantum theory of the photoelectric effect in metals in 1931, and Shubin advanced a band theory of liquid metals in 1933. Between 1934 and 1936, Shubin and S. V. Vonsovskii constructed polar and s-d exchange models of crystals.
