[və′lir·ē·ən ‚ȯil] (materials) A combustible, yellow to brown liquid with a penetrating aroma; soluble in alcohol, acetone, and other organic solvents; derived from the roots and rhizome of the garden heliotrope (Valeriana officinalis), the main components being pinene, camphene, borneol, and esters; used in medicine, flavors, and industrial odorants and to perfume tobacco.
